Chairperson's Message
School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering (SMME), IIT Mandi is focused on teaching and cutting-edge research in the broad areas of mechanical engineering and materials science and technology. SMME offers BTech programs in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering and General Engineering with strong emphasis on product realization and practical learning. SMME also offers masters programmes in Mechanical Engineering and Materials science with an emphasis on the study of energy systems. Along with that masters and doctoral research in broad areas of materials science and mechanical engineering such as solid mechanics and design, thermal engineering, manufacturing technology and materials science is also under the focus of the SMME. We encourage high-quality research and training to the next generation of scholars for enabling them to successfully cater to the needs of the industries and academia related to improvements in the products and advancement in the fundamental knowledge related to mechanical engineering and materials sciences. I invite committed and motivated students, and faculty members to be part of this journey and make it more impactful.
About Us
The School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering (SMME) is one of the founding schools in IIT Mandi. Initially a part of School of Engineering, SMME became an independent school in 2021. SMME remains committed to high standards of engineering education through outstanding teaching, innovative curricula, and an excellent research environment. Currently, the school offers several diverse programs, such as Bachelor of Technology (BTech), Master of Technology (by Research) or MTech (by Research) as well as a doctoral program (PhD). MTech (by Research) program is offered with specialisations in Solid Mechanics and Design, Manufacturing, Fluid–Thermal Engineering, Material Science, and Computational Mechanics. Similarly, students in the PhD programs do their research work in several specializations geared towards enabling them to tackle outstanding engineering problems relevant to the modern world. The faculty members of the school are involved in research and teaching in the areas of advanced materials, bio-mechanics, computational mechanics, composite design and manufacturing, energy engineering, smart structure & system, solid mechanics and thermo–fluidics.
